"Oh! Mei! It's Mei! Good morning, Mei!"

Mei only took a right turn off her street and onto the next one when a familiar voice called out to her. She looked in that direction and saw two familiar figures, a young girl and a Snivy, playing in the back yard of a familiar house just ahead of her. "Morning Lily!" she addressed the 9-year-old as she jogged up to the short fence that bordered the yard. "Is Hyu around?"

"He's inside," Lily answered, the Snivy she'd been playing with hopping up onto the fence to greet Mei. Lily then walked over to the back door, calling, "Big brother! Mei's here!"

From within the house came the sound of approaching footsteps and soon, Lily's elder brother, Hyu, emerged onto the back porch. Seeing Mei patting the top of his Snivy's head, he gave her a lazy smirk. "Hey, Donut-Buns," he greeted her, leaning against the door frame and sticking his hands in his pockets. "Come again to admire how awesome Argo is, I see. Are you really that jealous that I have a Pokémon and you don't?"

Mei looked up at the older boy. "You wish, Qwilfish," she sneered, "but at long last it's my turn to brag. Guess who has two thumbs and is getting her very own Pokémon, Pokédex, and will be leaving on a journey today?" Pridefully smirking, she jabbed her thumbs at herself. "This girl!"

All traces of light-hearted teasing vanished from Hyu's demeanor, leaving him gaping at Mei in surprise. Even Lily and Argo showed signs of astonishment. "Really? A journey?" he asked, leaning off the door frame. "And your Mom's alright with that?"

"She sure is," Mei answered, beaming. "Professor Juniper already sent her assistant to give me my first Pokémon! Granted, I don't know where she is, only that her name's Bianca and she's wearing a big green hat." She scratched the back of her head. "I, uh, stopped by to see if either of you've seen someone that fits that description."

"I haven't," Lily said with a shake of her head. "Have you, big brother?"

Hyu didn't seem to be paying attention. His red eyes were turned away and he was chewing on the inside of his mouth, an expression he usually wore if he was mulling something over. Then, without warning, he turned on his heel and dashed back inside the house. "Don't go anywhere!" he called over his shoulder. "I'll be right back!"

Mei blinked dumbly, then let out a low sigh. Sometimes Hyu did so many random things it was hard to keep up with him. But she was used to it by now, considering that they've been the best of friends ever since they were in diapers.

"Mei..." Looking down, Mei found that Lily had walked over to her. She had gently pulled Argo into her arms and she was staring up at Mei, a small smile on her face. "Be sure to take really, really good care of your Pokémon when you get it, okay?"

Mei stared back at Lily, her smile dampening a little. There was a certain sadness in the young girl's voice that worried Mei. "Yeah, of course." Fixing her smile, she ruffled the top of Lily's head. "I'll be sure to take extra special care of every Pokémon I get."

Mei's answer seemed to satisfy Lily; her smile grew bigger and more joyful. Hyu soon reappeared, his long-sleeved red and white jacket, black fingerless gloves, and bag now added to his attire. "In answer to you're earlier question," he began as he walked over to his sister, zipping up his jacket all the way up to his chin, "no; I haven't seen anyone that sounds like this 'Bianca' person. But you know what? I'll help you find her!"

Mei's eyebrows raised to hear her friend's offer. "Really?"

Using his arm as a support, Hyu hopped over the low-rise wall that fenced off his backyard, firmly planting his feet on the other side. "Sure! It's no problem at all! Aspertia's a big place; she's probably never been here before and may be lost, but we'll find her! C'mon, Argo!" Hearing his name being called, Hyu's Snivy wiggled his way out of Lily's arms and climbed up Hyu's side until he was comfortably perched atop his head. Hyu then turned to his little sister. "Lily, you should go back inside, 'kay? I'll see you later."

Lily nodded. "Okay, big brother! Bye-bye, Mei!"

Mei waved farewell to Lily as she entered her home, and she and Hyu set off. As they searched the streets of Aspertia City in search of Bianca, Mei kept telling Hyu about how she couldn't believe her luck. "Feels like only yesterday that we were kids and making plans for going on journeys with our own Pokémon. We've talked so many times about how we were going to go on journeys when we got older, and now that time's finally come! And just when I was starting to believe that it would never come, too!" The brunette clasped her hands behind her back, gleefully smiling up at the sky. "You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this..."

Glancing at her out of the corner of his eye as they walked, Hyu smiled. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I've actually been waiting for this, too..."

A few minutes later, Mei abruptly stopped walking. "Hold on a minute." Turning, she looked to Hyu then to Argo then back to Hyu, eyes hinted with suspicion. "You've had Argo for quite a while now, and you're a year older than me; why haven't you left on a journey yet?"

Hyu had also stopped walking. He stared at Mei for a few seconds then up at the Snivy nestled in his spiky dark hair. "We've been training," he answered plainly after a moment, "making careful preparations so that we were completely ready before leaving home. I've had this guy ever since he was an egg, and those don't hatch over night, y'know."

Argo looked down from his perch and met his Trainer's gaze. "And you know what," he continued, mouth forming a smile. "I think it's high-time we see how well all our training has paid off. Whaddaya say, Argo, wanna set out and explore Unova with me?"

Flashing a smile, the grass starter let out a cry of joy and nodded. 'Yes! That sounds like fun!'

Having watched the scene go down, Mei's cerulean eyes narrowed in suspicion. "What are you playing at? You suddenly decide to leave on a journey the very same day I get to leave on mine...What gives, Hyu?"

The eighteen-year-old boy looked over at her and lazily shrugged. "There aren't any strong Trainers around here worth battling. And I'm getting bored with battling with all the wild Pokémon around here."

Mei wasn't convinced yet. "Is that all?" she spat, crossing her arms over her chest.

Hyu's red eyes looked away from her, focusing on nothing yet narrowing significantly. "No," he muttered lowly, hands hiding in the pockets of his pants. "Truth is, there's something that I have to do. And to do that, I need the help of someone that I can trust besides Argo and any other partners I may get along the way." His voice became softer as he uttered the next few words. "A person I can trust..."

Hyu's darkened mood eased away any suspicions Mei had of him. Her head tilted slightly to one side, ears barely catching what he had said at the end. "I assume you're referring to me then?"

He turned back to her, grinning broadly. "Course I am, Mei! We've known each other practically all our lives; there could be no better candidate for someone I can trust with this! You're also strong and have good instincts to boot, so that's a plus!"

His sudden change in mood dumbfounded Mei, but she soon recovered and giggled. "How would you know if I'm strong and have good instincts? I've never been in a battle before."

"That's not true," Hyu claimed. "You've battled with Pokémon before, remember? When we were around ten?"

Thinking for a moment, Mei was surprised that she had forgotten about the incident Hyu was talking about. "That was years ago," she argued, scratching the back of her head in abash, "and I was using my mom's Pokémon and they were doing all the work..."

Hyu rolled his eyes and lightly shook his head. "I know what I saw. You really are strong, Mei, and the kind of strength you have is the kind of strength I need to help me out on my...'quest', I suppose I should call it. However..."

He walked straight up to Mei and placed one hand on her shoulder, making her flinch. Mei looked up and met his gaze, keeping eye contact as the older, taller boy continued speaking. "I don't want to force you into helping me out; it's entirely your decision to make. And, whether or not you agree, of course I'll still be there to give you a hand whenever you need it. So, Mei, can I count on you?"

Mei stared wide eyed at Hyu, a little surprised and confused. A 'quest'? Though they've been friends since childhood, even she didn't know what he was talking about. Looked like there were still things they still didn't know about each other after all.

It took the brunette little to no time to flash a smile and nod. "Definitely! You can always count on me, Hyu!"

Hyu mimicked her smile. "Good answer! Now let's go get your Pokémon!"

--------

Mei and Hyu searched Asperita City for half an hour and still no sign of a girl wearing a big green hat named Bianca. The only place left to search was the city's outlook point. "It's the city's most famous spot," Hyu had commented when they asked each other why they didn't think of looking there first. "I'll bet Bianca's up there looking at the scenery!"

The trek up the stairs to the lookout point was a short one, and when they were halfway to the top Hyu lingered back. "You go on and get your Pokémon," he told Mei, casually leaning up against the railing. "I'll wait here for you."

"Okay! See you in a minute!" Mei cheerfully said before bounding up the rest of the steps. Hyu chuckled as he watched her disappear from his view. The brunette was always so lively and bouncy; she always gave him delight whenever she'd stop by.

Yet, underneath it all, Hyu knew that there was some great untapped potential in his friend.

He'd got a taste of that potential many years ago, when both he and Mei were ten years of age. They were playing near the edge of town with her mother's Swanna and Ampharos when a swarm of wild Pokémon came out of nowhere and began attacking. After all the time that had past, it still remained unclear what was making the Pokémon behave so oddly. But the way Mei reacted to the sudden onslaught was what stuck out in Hyu's mind the most.

How calmly she took in the situation. How authoritatively she issued orders to her mother's Pokémon. How effectively her commands stopped the wild ones. Even back then there was no way Hyu could deny that beneath all her cheerful perkiness, Mei was a force to be reckoned with. It was seeing her do so well to stop the wild Pokémon that inspired him to get one of his own as soon as possible; he didn't want to be shown-up.

Who could have foreseen the events that transpired just a few years later because of that...

Hyu's smile disappeared, replaced by a thin line. His red eyes narrowed, focusing intently on nothing in particular. His hands, previously hanging limply from the ends of his arms, turned into fists. He felt his jaw clenching inside his mouth, his teeth grinding harder and harder the more anger built up inside him. His tightly formed fists began shaking-

   "Check it out, Hyu!"

Hyu flinched to hear Mei's voice so nearby. He and Argo glanced up to see her bounding down the stairs toward them, followed by a blonde wearing an orange jacket, red glasses, a big green hat with a white bow, and a sunny smile. In one arm she held some sort of glass tube, through which Hyu could see two PokéBalls. He then realized that this woman must be Bianca.

His anger subsiding, he smirked at the approaching party. "'Bout time, Donut-Buns," he said in a small scoff. "How long were you planning on keeping me waiting, anyway?"

Coming to a stop beside him, Mei pouted at the older boy. "I haven't been gone for five minutes! You oughta be more patient, Qwilly! Anyway, this is Tristen!" She happily held up the Oshawott in her arms. "Say hello to Hyu and Argo, Tristen!"

The Sea Otter Pokémon looked between Hyu and Argo for a few moments before smiling at them. 'Hi there! Nice to meet you!'

Interested in the new Pokémon, Argo jumped out of Hyu's hair and landed on the railing. Now that they were eye level, Argo smiled and waved at Tristen. 'Nice to meet you too, pal!'

"So this is your partner, huh?" Hyu commented softly as Mei's Oshawott joined his Snivy on the railing, the two conversing with each other. "Hmm, doesn't look like much, to be honest..."

Obviously Hyu didn't say this softly enough, for Tristen suddenly scowled at him and reached for his scalchop. 'What'd you say, punk?!'

"Aw, don't say that about him!" the blonde woman chirped, apparently also hearing Hyu's comment. She skipped over to Tristen and gently patted his head, which soon calmed him down. "I used to have an Oshawott, y'know. He turned out to be the strongest member of my team!"

"Really?" Mei asked, excited by the thought that her little Tristen was going to become much stronger.

"Uh-huh! Of course, he's not an Oshawott anymore. He's all grown up now." A small, dreamy sigh passed through Bianca's lips. "So much time has passed since then, and so much has changed..."

The blonde removed her hand from Tristen's head and placed it under her jaw, propping her elbow on the railing and staring off into the distance. She seemed to be off in her own little world now. Hyu looked back to Mei's new Pokémon, thoughtfully chewing on the inside of his mouth. "Hey, Mei," he said suddenly. "Let's have a battle."

The brunette looked to her friend, raising an eyebrow. "A battle? Now?"

"Yeah," Hyu answered, looking back to her and smirking. "I want another taste of that strength you showed all those years ago. And it looks like Tristen wants to battle as well."

'You bet your spiky head I do!' the Oshawott growled, jumping down from the railing and taking a battle stance in front of Mei. 'Doesn't look like much... I'll show you who doesn't look like much!'

Based on her new Pokémon's angry yells, she shrugged. "Alright, if you insist."

Hyu's smirk widened. "Argo, use Tackle!"

--------

Only a few minutes passed and Tristen stood victorious over Argo, much to Hyu's surprise. "Yay!" Mei cheered as she picked up her Oshawott. "Way to go Tristen! You won our first battle!"

The water starter smirked in pride. 'Yeah. I'm awesome. What else is new?'

Though he had been defeated, Hyu smiled to hear Mei's cheerful praises to her new partner. He bent down so he could pick up Argo and feed him an Oran Berry. "We lost," he quietly claimed, "but that's alright, isn't it buddy?"

Argo nodded. Holding Tristen in her arms, Mei looked at Hyu, grinning. "Not bad for our first battle, huh?"

"It sure was different than having to battle a wild Pokémon, that's for sure." Shrugging, he stood back up, Argo now resting comfortably on his shoulders. "Well, whatever. I'm just happy to know that you're strong enough that I can count on you." Giving Mei a small smile, he turned to look at Bianca, who had been silently watching the battle unfold. "Hey, you're Bianca, right?"

"That's me!" the blonde answered, pushing her red glasses back up the bridge of her nose. "Um...who're you again?"

"The name's Hyu," he answered calmly. "You gave my friend here a Pokédex, right? I'd like one too."

Bianca looked slightly shocked to hear this. "Huh? But why do you want one?"

"I want to become stronger. If I have a Pokédex, then I can learn more about Pokémon, which will make me tougher, right? And I'm going to be traveling throughout Unova to complete my...'quest', so I'll need all the strength and smarts that I can get to pull it off. If it's not too much trouble, could I also have a Pokédex?"

Bianca held her chin in her hand, leafy green eyes looking down as she thought over the teen's request. "Hmm...I don't really get it, but okay! Going on a journey is always good, right? You're in luck, Hyu." She reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out the same device she gave Mei just a few minutes ago. "In my rush to get here, I accidentally grabbed two! You can have this one!"

"Thanks," Hyu politely said as he accepted the electronic index. He looked over it a few times before stowing it in his bag. He then turned to Mei. "I'm going to be heading out now. You'd better take Tristen to the Pokémon Center; it'd be wise for him to be in top condition before you leave town."

"Yeah yeah, I know," Mei said with a dismissive wave of her arm. "I'm not completely clueless on how to be a Trainer!"

The dark-haired boy chuckled, but then looked directly into Mei's eyes, his full of seriousness. "Be sure to get stronger, 'cause I'm definitely going to be counting on you in the future." Turning on his heel, he descended the stairs, lazily waving goodbye over his shoulder. "See you around, Donut-Buns!"

Bright cerulean eyes blinked a few times. Then, a smile spread across Mei's face as she lightly shook her head. "See you later, Qwilfish!"

With Argo on his shoulders, Hyu made his way to the gate leading out of Aspertia City, a determined gleam in his dark red eyes and an equally determined thought in his mind. I'm older, smarter, stronger, and now I have Mei to back me up...I will definitely get back what I'm looking for! No matter what!
